Year 13 Drama

Guidance for parents

What will students be studying in Drama this year?

In Year 13 students will be preparing their own devised piece of theatre from a stimulus chosen by the teacher. They will be performing this in a particular drama style.

They will be building a set of preparatory notes that shall form the basis of their written structured record.

Students will also be studying two plays from pre- twentieth century drama. One will be a set text that they will study practically from the point of view of director, actors and designers. The other will be a play they will see in the theatre and then contrast its modern interpretation with its original staging conditions.

What are the major assessments this year?

  1. The devised performance, teacher assessed and externally moderated.
  2. The written documentary evidence notes from the performance, demonstrating preparatory evidence and evaluation.
  3. The final two and half hour paper on the texts studied.

Section A; The set text, 3 short questions on a chosen extract.

Section B; The set text, a general question on the staging of the play overall.

Section C; a question comparing the evaluation of a modern interpretation of a play with research evidence of its original staging conditions.

What will the current performance grade be based?

The grade will be based on the progress made on the devised practical work at that point, any completion of the structured record preparation notes or drafts and a mock paper on the plays studied.

What should my daughter/ son  do if she feels she is struggling in the subject?

Take the courage to chat to their teacher, we are here to help and encourage. We can support with a positive learning conversations which will help to build their confidence.

We can also set achievable targets together. It is important that the students feel comfortable and relaxed in a drama environment so that confidence and creativity can grow.
