Governor Biographies

Mrs Naureen Khalid (Appointed Governor) Chair
Naureen is married with three daughters who are or have been Newstead students. Naureen was a University Lecturer before giving up work to start her family. She has been heavily involved with Newstead, first as a member of the PTA’s Social Committee and the cover staff and then as a governor. She joined the governing body as a parent governor and is currently an appointed governor and Member of the Trust. Naureen has been a governor for over five years at Newstead and has recently also been appointed as a community governor at a local junior school. She is the author of a blog about governance (http://www.governingmatters.wordpress.com/) and has been quoted in the Guardian on the importance of governor training. Naureen is a member of the Resources Committee.

Mr Steve Penny (Appointed Governor) Vice Chair
After leaving the Royal Air Force as a Wing Commander, Steve joined Lockheed Martin as a communications engineer and was subsequently seconded to the US and UK Governments working in both London and Washington. He is currently working in the area of Information Security. Steve was initially educated at Warwick University and subsequently studied at London, Loughborough and Oxford Brookes Universities. He is a STEM UCAS tutor for the Social Mobility Foundation, having completed a further degree with the OU which included experience of teaching in secondary schools. Steve's interests include Music (playing and composition), skiing and he is a commissioned officer in the Air Training Corps.
Steve serves on the Resources Committee.

 

Mr Jonathan Capon (Appointed Governor)
Jonathan is an Global Account Director at Visa Europe where he has worked for the past 11 years. Prior to that, he spent 12 years at NatWest Bank in a variety of roles within Corporate and Institutional Finance and Corporate Banking. After graduating from Queen Mary College, University of London, Jonathan attended the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst from where he was commissioned into the Army. Jonathan was elected as a Parent Governor in 2008 and upon the expiry of his 4 year term was made an appointed Governor by the Members of the Academy Trust.
Jonathan has been married for 23 years to Mary and lives in Orpington with his 3 daughters; the elder two attending Newstead Wood School.
Jonathon serves on the Standards Committee.

Mrs Christine Allsop (Appointed Governor)
Christine joined the governing body in March 2013.  She is a recently retired primary school head teacher, her last appointment being the “chance of a lifetime” to open and grow a brand new Kent County Council primary school.  Shortly after retiring, she was asked by KCC to be a Local Authority Appointed Governor supporting a KCC primary school and remains a governor at that school.  Before her teaching career Christine worked in central and local government.  She has recently undertaken the Kent and Medway’s Local Leader of Governance programme.  Christine and her husband live in Bromley and have three grown up children, all of whom attended LB Bromley primary and secondary schools before university. Christine is a member of the Standards Committee.

Mrs Jo-Anne Penn (Appointed Governor)
Jo is married with one daughter who left NWS in 2011. She is a practising Osteopath, Senior Clinical Tutor and lecturer at the British School of Osteopathy. Jo has recently rejoined the governing body as an appointed governor. She previously served as both a parent and community governor over an eight year period, with four years as Chair. Jo is currently serving on an Interim Executive Board, is a National Leader of Governance supporting Chairs through coaching and mentoring and is studying for a Post Graduate Certificate in Academic and Clinical Education.
Jo chairs the Admissions Committee and is a member of the Standards Committee.

Dr Lyndon Cabot (Appointed Governor)
Dr Cabot is a Senior Lecturer/Consultant and Director of Admissions at King's College London Dental Institute. He rejoined the Governing Body at the beginning of this academic year after a three year sabatical! He had previously been on the Governing Body at Newstead for more than ten years. He first chaired the Personnel and Finance Committees (now Resources). Later he became Chairman of the Governing Body for five very enjoyable years. He also has experience of teaching in secondary schools. He is now one of the Governing Body's 'backbenchers.'
Dr Cabot serves on the Standards Committee. 

Mr Nicholas Burgess (Staff Governor)
Nick is the school’s Network Manager as well as being a staff governor.
After 13 years’ experience working on the support staff within selective schools, 6 of which at Newstead, Nick was keen to give something back to the school and become a Staff Governor.
Nick’s interests include Outdoor Pursuits and he leads the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme at Newstead as well as being heavily involved in the organisation of a number of other outdoor trips.
Nick serves on the Resources Committee.
