Revision Tips

If you are reaching exam time or simply revising for an end of topic test, click here for advice on preparation. Check lists for subject topics can be found on the Subject Areas pages (see main menu).

Academic Tutoring

Below are some suggested stratagies to improve your own learning in science.

Understanding and application of knowledge

• Focus on learning objectives during the lesson, tick when you understand, ask if you do not

• Use learning objectives as the focus of your revision

• Take careful note of comments made on written work, or to class when work is gone over

Investigative skills

• Be aware of the key principles of the scientific method

• At KS3 focus on the criteria for investigative skills

• AT KS4 focus on the learning objectives for “How Science Works”

Thinking skills

• Practise explaining scientific concepts to a friend/parent

• Try to explain why, whenever you answer a question

• Question your teacher if you are unsure of the reasons behind what you are doing

• Look for links to other topics and subjects

• Practise spotting relationships between variables

• Think of analogies to explain concepts

You may also find it helpful to look at the Assessment Criteria section.

Extra Support

For some exam groups there may be extra revision classes. Ask your teacher for more specific information.

If you are finding one or more of your sciences particularly difficult, we may be able to arrange for an older student to mentor you. This usually involves giving up part of one lunchtime a week to meet with your mentor and work through some extra problems that will consolidate work already covered in class. If you are interested in having a mentor, please speak to your science teacher or the head of department.
