We have a philosophy of high challenge with support

The English Department is highly successful at all levels of public examination and its eight specialist members contribute much to the life of the school. 

We aim to develop in our students a love of reading and of language based upon a sound knowledge of its workings and a growing sense of its beauty, variety and flexibility.  As a team, we welcome teachers with enthusiasm and new ideas who will help us to enrich and extend the National Curriculum with our able and talented students. Wide reading and creative writing are encouraged across the age range.

Our students are almost always reading ahead of what might be expected. All classes are mixed ability, within our range.  English is popular and students are eager to progress, whether in reading, writing or speaking and listening. Increasingly large numbers opt for English Literature in the Sixth Form and many continue its study at university.
