German at Newstead
German is offered throughout the school and has an excellent record of results at KS3, GCSE and A level. Almost all students gain grades in the range A* to B at GCSE and A*/B at A level.
As well as helping students to become confident in understanding and using the language, we aim to increase their knowledge of the culture and social organisation of German speaking countries. Germany is Europe’s biggest economy, one of the world’s top 4 economies, and is one of our major trading partners. The language is especially useful for scientists, musicians and those working in the tourist industry.
Lessons are enriched by the use of ICT, including interactive learning activities, individual listening facilities and direct access to German language websites. We also try out German food and customs and have an exceptionally wide range of opportunities for contact with the country. These include:
Y9 visit to the Christmas market in Aachen
Y10 annual exchange with a school in the beautiful lakeside town of Starnberg near Munich.
Y11-13 study trip to Berlin
Y12 Work experience exchange with students from Humboldt Gymnasium, Hamburg
We also host annual master classes on A level topics for students from across Bromley, take part in occasional cross-curricular German/technology activities, take students to day conferences and film days in London, and take students into local primary schools to introduce the pupils to German. Last year we hosted an intern from Germany, Nadja Angrik, who worked with groups of students to practise German using games and other activities. We are always looking for opportunities to support and challenge our students in their learning of German!
