Music Theory - This is a brilliant site. Contains animated explanations loads of theory. It is an American site, so be sure to click the ‘translations’ tab and link to ‘British English’ to get ‘our’ names for things (e.g. ‘bar’ rather than ‘measure’). Also has some trainers which are fun for testing your knowledge. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
8notes.com - Commercial site, but some free music to download and a lot of the famous bits from pop songs you’ve always wanted to play….
Allmusic.com - Loads of background information on your favourite bands and also classical composers. Free registration required.
Sibelius Music - Lots of free sheet music to download. Some famous pieces and much by new composers

Discovering Music - BBC Discovering Music – series of radio programmes analysing many famous pieces of music, with links to other useful areas of the BBC site
Classical Archives - Site containing many free MIDI files - useful if you just want to hear what a piece sounds like (synthesised sounds). Also links to loads of mp3 files. Many are free to listen to. Fantastic source of music to enlarge your knowledge of musical style!
Tonality Guide - A really interesting site, including an ‘analysis toolkit’ to help with those tricky chords.
